Charles Chaplins Limelight er en nedtonet hyldest til fortiden. En stolt skildring af en svunden underholdnings-æra og en bittersød beretning om en kunstner, der giver faklen videre til en ny generation. Chaplin spiller Calvero ("Vagabond-komikeren" ifølge en gammel plakat på hans værelse), som redder en fortvivlet ballerina (Claire Bloom) fra selvmord og fører hende frem til succes. Blandt filmens komiske højdepunkter er en musikalsk rutine, som er alt andet end rutine, når den udføres af Chaplin og Buster Keaton med stenansigtet. Charlie Chaplin writes, directs and stars in this comedy drama. Set in London, just before the start of the First World War, a former stage clown (Chaplin) rescues a young dancer (Claire Bloom) from suicide, helps her career and watches her rise to stardom, just as he is being forgotten.
